These were reserve troops of the Roman army and in the first few centuries of the Empire were general
ly recruited from people in the client states and provinces who did not have Roman citizenship. Their total number must have been more or less equivalent to that of the regular legions to which they were attached. The auxiliaries consisted of cavalry uni
ts (alae) of 480 or 1,000 men, divided into twelve or twenty-four squadrons (turmae), and infantry divisions (cohortes) of the same number of men, subdivided into six or twelve centuries. Alongside the auxiliaries fought the <<numbers,>> native soldiers
armed with their own weapons and commanded by their own officers. At the end of the long period of military service-twenty-five years-auxiliaries and their children were granted Roman citizenship.\par
